E-resource guide: E-books: Reading and downloading

Where can I find e-books purchased by the Library?

• You can find individual e-books in Andor search service. The books in ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online) and EEBO (Early English Books Online) collections can be found in their own interfaces.
• E-book collections can be found in the list of databases. Choose database type: e-book databases.

How can I access e-books?

• You can read e-books on computers belonging to the network of Tampere University, Tampere University of Applied Sciences or  Tampere University Hospital.
• You can also access e-books remotely from anywhere signing in to Andor/e-book service with your TUNI email address and password + multifactor authentication (see instructions in Tampere universities' intranet).

How can I read e-books?

• You can read e-books online in your computer's web browser (except some Ellibs books). PDF-files require Adobe Reader

• NB: If you are staff at Tampere University community and have a work computer, you can download Adobe Reader from Software Center.
• It is also possible to download most e-books to your device for a specific loan period and read them offline. The loan period ends automatically.
• To download an e-book you need a reader application (usually Adobe Digital Editions) and an Adobe ID for activating the reader for your device. It is also possible to choose "I want to authorize my computer without an ID".

How can I find information about e-book accessibility?

When you download a DRM (Digital rights management) protected e-book to your device you will need a separate reader program (for example Adobe Digital Editions or Thorium Reader) or the ebook service's own application (for example Ebook Central Reader App).

Adobe Digital Editions:

NB: If you are staff at Tampere University community and have a work computer, you can download Adobe Digital Editions from Software Center.

1. Download Adobe Digital Editions reader (computers and mobile devices). Downloading and using the reader is free.
2. Authorize the reader to your device :

• With your Adobe ID if you use a mobile device or if you want to read the book with several different devices. The Adobe ID is the email address you used when creating your Adobe account.  Choose Adobe ID as the eBook vendor. You can authorize the reader in the first time or later from ADE's menu Help - Authorize computer.

• Without Adobe ID. Choose "I want to authorize my computer without an ID". This is possible If you use an e-book with a computer and you do not want to use the same book with different devices.
• If you have problems with e-book downloading, you can try to erase the authorization in ADE (Help - Erase authorization) and then authorize again (Help - Authorize computer).

There is a mobile app available for some e-book services (e.g Ellibs, Ebsco eBooks). You can download the mobile apps from the app stores. Adobe Digital Editions is not needed when using the apps. You can find information about the possible mobile app from this guide's E-resources pages.
