TUNICRIS Guide: Research data

Research data

You can add descriptions of research data into TUNICRIS. High-quality metadata improves the findabilty and reusability of research data. In TUNICRIS you can also link research data metadata to other entities, for example publications and projects.

You can't add the research data itself to TUNICRIS. For more information about the university's research data services, see our research data management guide.

FAIR principles of research data

Research data refers to digital datasets, which are generated, processed and used in scientific research, and used as the basis for research findings. In addition to datasets, research data include information describing the context, contents and structure of the data (metadata), along with its lifetime management and processing. The research data produced at Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences are in principle shared and open.

At Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) research data refer to all the materials, methods and results produced and used in the TAMK research, development and innovation (RDI) projects.

Research data produced within Tampere higher education community should be:

  • Findable (your data is provided with metadata and persistent identifier)
  • Accessible (data is retrievable)
  • Interoperable (data can be integrated with other data)
  • Re-usable (data is well-described and can be replicated in different settings)

Familiarise yourself with these FAIR-principles and take them as guideline of your research data management. Check also services produced by CSC - IT for science, and use them to improve the level of FAIRness of your research. Read the Declaration for Open Science and Research (Finland) 2020-2025

Adding descriptions of research data

  1. Log in to TUNICRIS and click "Add new"
  2. Choose "Dataset"
  3. Fill in at least the mandatory fields (marked with )
  4. Click Save

Tampere higher education comunity's Open Science and Research policy

Tampere higher education community promotes responsible and open science, access to digital research data, scientific publications and research methods, and the use of open source codes, standards and interfaces in research. According to the higher education community's Open Science and Research policy:

  • Research data related to research results is by default open and meant for cooperative use
  • Every researcher is responsible for good data management and a data management plan (DMP) should be made at the beginning of a research project
  • Well-managed research data is also regarded as a merit for a researcher

Tampere higher education community promotes open science and research in data management but also in publishing activities. The goal is to increase visibility and availability of scientific research.

Research data should be "as open as possible, as closed as necessary", which is the guideline by the European Commission on Data Management. The Guidelines of FAIR Data Management in Horizon 2020 (pdf) was released in July 2016.

Data service

Research Data Services assist the staff and students of the Tampere higher education community in matters related to research data management. What we do:

  • We organise research data management and data protection trainings covering topics such as describing your data, data protection, data storage services and sharing your data. Content of trainings and workshops can be tailored to meet your needs. More detailed information on trainings will be updated to our website. Don't hesitate to contact us!
  • We provide you with this Data management guide and other instructions and resources for the planning, organising, storing, sharing and sharing of research data.
  • We comment on data management plans
