Target group and objectives of the training:

The training is aimed at researchers who have a personal profile in TUNICRIS, but it is not a necessary condition for participation in the training.

After the training, you will master the following: 

  • You know what a research information system is and what kind of data is maintained in the system 
  • You understand what the data in the system is still used for 
  • You are able to check, add or edit your TUNIRIS profile information if necessary 
  • You know the different ways to add publications to the system 
  • You can find further help and know where to turn for help if you need it

The instructors are the library's open science experts. The training will take place on Teams and will not be recorded.

Article-based dissertation: publishing & practices -training

Wednesday 12th February 2025 at 9.30-11.00 on Teams

The training is targeted at doctoral researchers working on an article-based dissertation.

After the training:

  • You know what steps are involved in the dissertation publication process at Tampere University.
  • You know why open access is essential in publishing a dissertation.
  • You have an understanding of the different options for open access publishing, as well as how copyright issues are related to these options.
  • You know what kind of support is available for open access publishing.
  • You can name some tools used in evaluating the reliability of a publication channel.

The instructors are open science specialists at Tampere University Library. The training will be held online via Teams, and it will not be recorded.

Journal Guide -training

Are you wondering in which journal to publish your article?

Finding a suitable journal for your article can be challenging sometimes, but Journal Guide will help you choose. With the Journal Guide you can check possible journals for publications, and you can browse journals by topic and publisher, among other things. The library does not recommend any specific journals, the decision where to publish always belongs to the researcher.

After training:

  • You will know what the Journal Guide is
  • You will know how to use the Journal Guide tool when choosing a publication channel
  • You can find further information and know where to turn for help if you need it

Self-archiving and TUNICRIS -training

The training is designed for researchers who have publications under the Tampere University affiliation. 

After the training:

  • You will understand the significance of self-archiving from the perspective of openness, visibility, and long-term availability of research 
  • You will know the roles of the publication archive and research information system in self-archiving 
  • You will know how to self-archive a publication yourself and where to send a publication to have it included in TUNICRIS 
  • You can find further information and know where to turn for help if you need it

Available discounts and funding for OA publishing -training

Support for Open Access publishing is available to members of the higher education community in many ways. Come and hear how you can make use of the library’s Open Access agreements, when the library can cover the costs of Open Access publishing for your publication, and what other pathways to Open Access are available to you.

The training is targeted at members of the higher education community who, in their work or studies, need information about open access article processing charges. 

After the training:

  • You will recognise the various ways of open access publishing and the differences between them
  • You will know how to use the Library's agreements on open access publishing and follow the instructions
  • You will know about other possible sources of funding for open access costs
  • You will understand the benefits and importance of self-archiving as part of open science
  • You can find additional instructions and know where to ask for help if necessary

Research Council of Finland and Plan S compliant publication channels -training

Thursday 3.4.2025 at 9:15-10:00. Teams link available on the Intranet (log in with TUNI account)

The training is targeted at members of the higher education community who work in Research Council of Finland's (formerly known as Academy of Finland) funded projects.

After the training: 

  • You will understand Research Council of Finland's policy on open access publishing, and its impact on the choice of publication channel​
  • You will know how to identify Plan S-compatible publication channels
  • You will know how to choose the type of open access publishing according to the Research Council of Finland's guidelines
  • You will know why and how self-archiving is done
  • You can find additional information and know where to ask for help if necessary

Evaluating the quality of publication channels -training

Tuesday 13.5.2025 at 10.15–11.00. Teams link available on the Intranet (log in with TUNI account)

This training is particularly aimed at staff who are not very experienced in scholarly publishing yet.

After the training:

  •  You will be able to take various perspectives into account when choosing a publication channel.
  •  You will know what so-called predatory publications and conferences are, and be able to identify their main characteristics.
  • You will learn about the background and implications of unethical publishing activities.
  • You will get to know the essential tools for assessing the quality of publication channels, but also understand the various limitations associated with them.
