Article-based dissertation -training

The training is targeted at doctoral researchers working on an article-based dissertation.

After the training:

  • You know what steps are involved in the dissertation publication process at Tampere University.
  • You know why open access is essential in publishing a dissertation.
  • You have an understanding of the different options for open access publishing, as well as how copyright issues are related to these options.
  • You know what kind of support is available for open access publishing.
  • You can name some tools used in evaluating the reliability of a publication channel.

The instructors are open science specialists at Tampere University Library. The training will be held online via Teams, and it will not be recorded.

Are you wondering in which journal to publish your article?

Finding a suitable journal for your article can be challenging sometimes, but Journal Guide will help you choose. With the Journal Guide you can check possible journals for publications, and you can browse journals by topic and publisher, among other things. The library does not recommend any specific journals, the decision where to publish always belongs to the researcher.

After training:

  • You will know what the Journal Guide is
  • You will know how to use the Journal Guide tool when choosing a publication channel
  • You can find further information and know where to turn for help if you need it

Choosing the right publication channel

What should you consider when trying to select the right publication channel for your article or book manuscript? This training is particularly aimed at early career researchers or staff with limited experience in academic publishing.

After the training:​

  • You will be able to take various perspectives into account when choosing a publication channel​.
  • You will know what so-called predatory publications and conferences are, and be able to identify their main characteristics​.
  • You will learn about the background and implications of unethical publishing activities.​
  • You will get to know the essential tools for assessing the quality of publication channels, but also understand the various limitations associated with them.

This training is intended for members of the higher education community who want to learn about article processing charges related to Open Access publishing in their academic work or studies.

After the training:

  • You will understand the different ways of open access publishing and the differences between them
  • You will know how to use the library's agreements on open access publishing and act according to the instructions
  • You will know about other possible sources of funding for open access costs
  • You will find additional instructions and know where to ask for help if necessary

Research Council of Finland and Plan S compliant publication channels -training

Monday 13.4.2026 at 9:15-10:00. Teams link available on the Intranet (log in with TUNI account)

The training is targeted at members of the higher education community who work in Research Council of Finland's (formerly known as Academy of Finland) funded projects.

After the training: 

  • You will understand Research Council of Finland's policy on open access publishing and its impact on the choice of publication channel​
  • You will know how to identify Plan S-compatible publication channels
  • You will know how to choose the form of open access publishing according to the guidelines of the Research Council of Finland
  • You will know where to find tools for identifying Plan S-compatible publication channels
  • You will know where to find additional instructions and know where to ask for help if necessary
