Conversational AI applications

There are several AI-powered applications available online that enable natural language interaction. These services work by receiving a text input (prompt), and the response is generated based on the AI's analysis. Simply put, their operation can be compared to predictive text input on a mobile phone. Generative, or conversational, AI applications are trained on massive volumes of text, which allows them to engage in dialogue on almost any topic. However, it’s important to remember that the text produced by AI models is not always reliable and should not be used as a factual source.

Examples of conversational AI applications:

  • ChatGPT is a generative AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, launched in 2022. It was the first widely available service based on a large language model capable of producing human-like conversational responses. It remains the most well-known and widely used conversational AI application.

  • Claude is a family of large language models and a chatbot developed by Anthropic. The first model was released in March 2023. Anthropic PBC is a U.S.-based company founded by former OpenAI employees, specializing in the development of general AI systems and language models.

  • DeepSeek is an AI assistant developed in 2023 by a Chinese startup. It is based on open-source technology. Please note that the use of Chinese software and services on devices within Tampere Universities is prohibited.

  • Gemini is an AI assistant developed by Google, first released in 2023 under the name Bard. Gemini is integrated into various Google services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Maps.

  • Le Chat is an AI assistant developed in 2024 by the French company Mistral AI. It utilizes different models from Mistral AI, including Mistral Large, Mistral Small, and a prototype model called Mistral Next.
