Publishing a dissertation at the Tampere University: Press release

Doctoral dissertation press release

Research and researchers are of interest to the public. As doctoral dissertations are an important part of the scientific output of the University, it is important that there is readily available information on dissertations.

The staff at the Communications unit publishes all dissertation press releases as events on the University’s web page and intranet and shares them to Twitter. Finnish-language press releases to the Finnish media are sent via the Finnish News Agency STT’s press release distribution system. If you let us know your X account, we can tag you in university’s posts. It is also a good idea to share a link to your public defence event on your own social media channels.

The staff members select the doctoral dissertation press releases that are forwarded to the media according to news criteria. Please bear in mind that all media have their own editorial policy that determines which stories they will cover.

You can also be proactive and pitch your story idea to your own media contacts or to specialist magazines in your field.

Defending your thesis: Dissertation defense tips (videos)

These instructional videos offer concrete tips to learn how to master your communication skills on your defense day. Remember always contact your faculty for up-to-date details.

Check out the writing instructions

  • You as a doctoral candidate are responsible for writing the press release. The staff at the Communications unit will help with editing the press release. Look at the template for the press release and write a similar text.
  • Send the release and your photo to the Communications team (viestinta.tau@tuni.fi) three weeks before the public defence at the latest.

The press release must be written either in Finnish, in English or in both languages. You are responsible for translating the text.

Submit a photo of yourself

Your photo will be published alongside your press release. The photo should be of good quality and horizontal orientation. Send a professional-looking half-length portrait or half-body image as a separate image file, preferably in jpg format. You’re allowed to smile in the photo!

Please note that the media will have access to your photo via the STT media service and can publish it on their own channels. Make sure you have the rights to use the photo and remember to include the name of the photographer.
