Patent classifications, country and kind codes

The patent classification is a way of defining the technical field of an invention, it allows you to restrict your search to a particular technical field and to keep the number of search results at reasonable level (PRH, 2016).

WIPO Country Codes
Composed of two letters (e.g. FI), that tell in which country the patent application has been made or approved.

Kind Codes
Include a letter and in many cases a number to distinguish the kind of document (e.g., publication of an application for a utility patent, patent, design patent) and the level of publication (e.g., first or corrected publication).
