Terms of Use: E-resources

General

Electronic materials are protected by the copyright law. The terms of use of the materials are specified in the licensing agreements and vary from service to service. The Library acquires e-materials via FinELib consortium and directly from publishers or vendors. You can find links to the terms of use in:

Often the basic principle is that material can be used for study, research and teaching purposes, but commercial exploitation is prohibited.

The licences of Kopiosto are not concerning the resources which are licenced of agreements mentioned above. You are not allowed to copy neither books or standards in SFS Online nor digital notes and digital teaching materials by publishers.

What is allowed?

  • You can browse and make searches in the materials.
  • Parts of the material can be printed on paper or stored electronically.
  • Often an individual article may be sent to a colleague employed by another organization in the name of scientific communication.
  • Most of the materials can be used in electronic course environments, usually by providing links to the material.

What is not allowed?

  • To use material or parts of material for commercial purposes.
  • Systematically download data using automated robotic programs.
  • Save and share full texts in learning environments without separate permission.
  • Make licensed material available to others, e.g. in the internet.

Customers outside of the academic community can access our e-materials on Library's customer computers, with the exception of the materials that require Tuni account login. There is no remote access available for customers outside of the the academic community.

AV materials

AV material refers to film works as intended by copyright law. All kinds of works containing moving images are considered to be film works that exceed the copyright threshold, such as movies, TV shows, music videos, commercials, and online videos. More details can be found on the Kopiosto website (in Finnish and Swedish).

The lectures are public events, which is why, permission is required for using films in teaching. It is not allowed to air films publicly or at commercial events.

Open Access materials

Following the principles of open science and research, an increasing proportion of scientific publications are openly available. There are also plenty of e-journals and e-books that are wholly or partially openly available.

Always check the terms of use for the materials in question. Creative Commons is the best known system that allows the author to administer their copyrights. Other authorisation may also allow the use of materials.
