Reference management: Configure settings

This guide provide information about reference management tools

Please note that

There are different desktop versions of Zotero and an online version (there may be differences in the functionality of the versions).

  •  For more information on the version history of Zotero (released versions of Zotero 6.0, the desktop version of the software distributed by the university )
  • Zotero 7 beta (desktop version)(If you want to run the latest prerelease version of a Zotero component e.g., to take advantage of a recent bug fix or test a new feature, you can install a beta build. These versions are built regularly and may be less stable than release versions.)
  • Zotero Tutorial by Cindy Schmidt (images from the Mac version)

In addition to the desktop version, there is an online version, which you can sign up for if you wish (Note! No university usernames/passwords are used to create an account, Zotero is not a university-managed application.)

You can configure settings

  • Edit> Preferences
  • Edit > Settings

Settings

Mac: click on Zotero on the top left hand corner --> Settings/Preferences

  • Preferences in the Edit  -> Preferences -> Advanced
  • Settings in the Edit menu -> General->

Language

Define the settings for attachments, keywords

For example, you can specify the following items in the settings

1. If you do not want the pdfs to be saved automatically:

  • Edit > Preferences > General
  • Edit > Settings> General tab: uncheck Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items.

2. uncheck Automatically take snapshots when creating items from web pages/Automatically take snapshots when creating a listing from a web page

3. You can define keywords for references yourself by unchecking Automatically tag items with keywords and subject headings.

Why should you uncheck these boxes in the settings:

  •     By default, Zotero adds attachments such as screenshots of web pages and pdf files, if available. While this default setting is convenient, it can quickly reduce Zotero's storage space.
  •     Zotero imports tags that it detects when you import an item from a database or library catalog, but these imported tags can confuse the reference information. If you wish, you can define the appropriate keywords for the reference yourself.
